Terms and Conditions

If you’re reading this, it can mean only one thing: You are part of the 1.43% of all internet users who actually read T&Cs before ticking the box.

You are a rare breed. Revel in your obsession.

Given the effort you have made to pick your way through the syntactical rubble that is, in all truth, a fairly standard piece of legalese, we will try and make it worth your while.

These terms and conditions apply to the use of the Good Books website and the goods available through it. In using our website or purchasing goods from our suppliers, you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions. All good so far?

Let’s press on…

If you do not accept these terms and conditions, please do not use this website or purchase goods through any of the links we provide. It’s not that we don’t like you or anything, it’s just that buying books online is a two-way street.

Disclaimer: “Here we go” I hear you say. “This is where they duck any responsibility.” Not strictly true, we can only be responsible for the things for which we are responsible: The information and goods provided through this website are provided for the benefit of users in good faith and with all reasonable care.

However.

Despite our best efforts, it may be remotely possible that errors and omissions in information occur. (Hey, if we were perfect we’d be teaching paddleboarding in The Bahamas and giving profits to Oxfam that way.) We invite customers to alert us to any such errors or omissions but cannot accept any liability for loss or damage which may directly or indirectly result from any opinion, information, advice, representation or omission contained on this website, or through any linked websites. This disclaimer does not attempt to exclude liability in relation to any term implied by law which cannot be lawfully excluded.
All perfectly straightforward then.

Still with us?

Site content and functionality: We endeavour to keep all information on our site both up to date and accurate. Some would say – quite rightly – it’s the least we can do. However on some occasions this is not always possible and our regret that this cannot be guaranteed is both sincere and unconditional. On rare occasions some of the functionalities of the website can be suspended temporarily during maintenance, repair operations and nano-bots partying in our mainframe. We will do our best to ensure that these occasions are as brief and infrequent as possible.

Terms and conditions of sale: Good Books is a 100% not-for- profit, registered charitable trust domiciled in the remote, beautiful, eternally vibrating archipelago that is Aotearoa New Zealand, registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957. We don’t so much give all our money away as act as a genuinely benevolent conduit for yours. It goes like this: Our books are supplied by the online book stores we link you to. When any one of these stores confirms an order they then pay a fee to Good Books based on the retail margin applicable to the item sold. We give the entire amount to fund charitable projects through Oxfam. This structure satisfies the requirements of the local Charitable Trusts Act. Our costs are zero because all our local work is voluntary, our services are pro bono and any resources are donated, ensuring maximum benefit to the less fortunate. And if you’ve read this far, that can hardly include you.

We are committed to fair business practices. Well, of course. Isn’t that what this whole thing is about? Good Books comes under the legal jurisdiction of Aotearoa New Zealand and our website follows the Model Code for Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce and the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. Should the stupefying prospect of reading them somehow spin your wheels, both acts are available at: http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz. Good Books also observes its obligations as set out by the Fair Trading Act 1986, which can be accessed at: http://www.comcom.govt.nz for swift and easy reference.

Still with us? Amazing. Your patience will be rewarded – maybe even in this lifetime.

We’re onto the final lap: Where the provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 apply, these terms will be read subject to the application of that Act, and in the case of any conflict, the provisions of that Act will apply. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 does not apply to business customers purchasing products for the purposes of a business (where ‘business’ is as defined by the Act). Business customers agree that where products are purchased for the purpose of a business that the Act does not apply. Glad we cleared that up.

Prices:  Nota bene: The same book can be found with more than one price. This is because we use a number of sellers, they have different set prices and they live in different countries.

Order Queries: Customers who wish to discusss, amend, cancel or arrange returns for any order must liaise with the seller.

Registered members’ newsletter accounts: In using this website or signing up for our newsletters you accept all responsibility for maintaining the confidentiality of your account details, including your password. This may involve restricting access to your computer to prevent unauthorised use of your account, as you will be always be personally responsible for any activity that takes place under your registered account details. In other words, don’t let the kids lose on your computer.

And on the subject of children: Clearly a whole lot of the products we promote are child-appropriate. However, our range of promoted books provides a wide choice, suitable for many different readers and some material may contain potentially offensive content. We do not control the listings of our supliers. Please simply avoid anything you feel offends you. And we do recommend that all purchases intended for children are thoroughly vetted by the parent or guardian before use, with or by children.

Your Conduct: By using this website or entering into correspondence with Good Books you accept full responsibility for all data and electronic communications sent from your computer to us. So play nice.
